"Camp" is often associated with glamour, surfaces and an ostentatious display of chic, but as these authors argue, there is an underside to it that has often gone unnoticed: camp’s simultaneous investment in dirt, vulgarity, the discarded and rejected, the abject. This book explores how camp challenges and at the same time celebrates what is arguably the single most important and foundational cultural division, that between the dirty and the clean. In refocusing camp as a phenomenon of the dark underside as much as of the glamorous surface, the collection hopes to offer an important contribution to our understanding of the cultural politics and aesthetics of camp.

"Visions of Vienna. Narrating the City in 1920s and 1930s Cinema", offers a close look of how directors such as Erich von Stroheim, Ernst Lubitsch, G. W. Pabst, and Max Ophüls made use of the city in their work. The book shows how the glorification of the Habsburg era can be seen as directly tied to crucial issues of modernity. Films set in Vienna articulate over and over again the  experience of displacement caused by emigration, anti-Semitism, changing gender relations, anti-feminism, and class distinction. These pressing themes run counter to the ongoing mystification of Vienna as the incarnation of "waltz dreams" and nostalgic schmaltz.

Let me speak for myself, as a Jew, an Israeli, a historian, a writer and a woman with a voice: no. It is not politically correct to arouse the Jews of the old operas from their slumber. But we should." (Fania Oz-Salzberger) Any approach to the sensitive and multifaceted theme of 'Jewishness' must be undertaken from a very broad perspective. The idea is to reflect upon religion, history and tradition, while discussing and examining perceptions of Jewishness. This publication makes an effort to cover the widest possible spectrum, in order to meet the challenge of this complex task. Entirely in keeping with the mandate of the European Academy of Music Theatre as a forum for dialogue between research and practice, it comprises articles by international scholars and artists, such as composers, directors, opera singers, cantors, artistic directors of opera houses and critics from Europe, Israel and the USA. This ensures many different perspectives, in view of the very broad scope of the theme. The title may be seen as a superficially provocative reference to Richard Wagner’s disastrous anti-Semitic essay "Das Judentum in der Musik", however, that controversial pamphlet is not the theme of the articles in the present volume. Instead, it focuses on the enriching influence and the creative force of Jewish culture and Jewish artists in opera.

Animation bewegt Bilder, Emotionen, die Kunst, die Industrie und wandelt auch die Forschung: sie stellt traditionelle Disziplinen und Theorien des (Audio-)Visuellen vor neue Herausforderungen. Die Aufsätze thematisieren signifikante Phänomene der Animationstheorie, -geschichte und -ästhetik wie etwa Hybridität, Bewegungsdarstellungen, Verbindungen von Ton und Bild, Motion Capture, bildgebende Verfahren der Medizin, experimentelle Architekturvisualisierungen oder Werbefilme für Game Engines. Der Sammelband analysiert die grundsätzliche Bedeutung, die Animation in unserer medialisierten Welt einnimmt.
Das Buch ist aus der 2012 in Hamburg als Kooperation der AG Animation und der Arbeitsstelle für grafische Literatur veranstalteten gleichnamigen Konferenz hervorgegangen. Die 11 Aufsätze kombinieren ausgewählte Beiträge von Konferenzteilnehmer*innen sowie geladenen Autor*innen und gehen auf die Relevanz und Ästhetik von Animation in verschiedenen medialen Zusammenhängen ein.
